8 Spiritual Reasons Art Heals

As an empath, highly sensitive or intuitive, your innate sensitivity is a deeply powerful, creative force.

Even if you don’t identify as creative, manifesting your soul’s purpose, and the highest vision for your life, is a deeply creative act. And when you’re cut off from this part of you that soulfully creates, you feel it: the restriction, the stagnation, and how fulfillment seems to be missing. It’s like being cut off from the Mother, from the Lunar or Cyclic part of your being. Life feels more restricted, stagnant, and stale; it feels too logical, harsh – even painful. There’s a reason children paint pictures first before writing words. Creation is a natural and innate part of us and the Universe. It’s a primal, universal life force.

Through my work as an Intuitive Artist, Creative Guide, and Mystic, facilitating healing energy, sound, and somatic work these past 10 years, I’ve been in awe of how Art is its own powerful healing modality, in its own right. I’d love to share my love and joy of art with you now, and why art is incredibly healing.

Here are 8 Spiritual Reasons Art is Healing:

  1. Art creates sacred space

Our homes are just empty space until we bring our Souls on its four walls. Art can be a powerful mirror of our emotions, dreams, visions, and the energy we always want to feel in our home. In a room with a lot of warm, fiery artwork, you feel activated, passionate, bold, and inspired to create. This fire element helps transmute fear, to reclaim your inner power and courage. Rooms with art that are more earthy and neutral however soothes, grounds, and brings your somatic system back to calm. It brings sweet memories with loved ones, and anchors the frequency of stability to your body and your Earth-life, as you build your dreams.

Art is a powerful space holder.

When artists create from a place of presence, love, or authentic inner congruence, they anchor in frequencies that are felt in your bones and resonate with your soul.

2. Creating makes you grow

In my work as an intuitive artist, there are three things that stretched my growth in unimaginable ways:

  • My Creative Practice

  • My Healing Journey

  • Building a Business

The creator’s path will accelerate your growth, in ways that are sometimes uncomfortable, even downright scary. But, the joys, connections, fulfillment, and new skills you gain from these initiations far outweigh any challenges you might experience, as you stretch your edges again and again. Your creative, healing, or soul-business paths are some of the most potent life teachers. Creating your life, projects, and dreams will lead you to amplified life experiences, skills, wisdom, and relationships. When they’re about to embark on creating their soul’s calling, I tell students or clients: “Are you ready to embrace this as a path of growth?”

Growth makes you wise and increases your capacity to hold more than you did before. Growth helps you embrace what you couldn’t embrace before. Growth helps you do things you didn’t know you could. Growth teaches you to see what’s yours and what’s another’s. Growth helps you love what used to be unfathomable to love.

3. Creativity helps you embrace your shadows and light

Creativity is the bridge between the higher and deeper, between energy and its manifestation into form.

When you’re creating, as you face a blank slate, you’ll come face to face with both your fears and inspiration. When you practice creativity, you practice befriending your doubts, fears, and the unknown. Just as you befriend awe, expansiveness, miracles, and the magnificence that could come out of your Divine Inner Being.

You’ll build this muscle of making your more fearful, hurting parts your friend, and being in touch with your intuition and Higher Self. Channeling love into your fears, and having compassion for your flaws, fallibilities, and humanity, is the harmony between the higher and lower, together.

4. Intuitive Art channels healing energy

Through my work as both an exhibiting artist and a holistic facilitator working with energy, sound, and somatics, I’ve experienced how painting intuitive art and facilitating healing energy to clients are nearly identical experiences. Both experiences require surrender: to surrender to something bigger than you. To be a clear vessel for energy that feels harmonious, uplifting, and illuminating for another.

Artworks embody their own frequency – like music, sound, or energy frequencies. I’ve experienced how soothing and transformative it is, to be in the presence of healing art, with its beauty that mirrors inner harmony and expansiveness. If you’ve felt moved by a piece of art, a movie, a book or a song, this transformative frequency coded into form by an artist is such a gift. A gift from the liminal realms, embodied into our Earthly, form-based realm.

5. Art facilitates somatic healing

Beyond the mystical lens, creating art helps facilitate the healing of trauma (alongside therapy and other modalities). When we’re in a deeply trauma-activated state, when our nervous system’s flooded and overwhelmed, our brain’s capacity to form words shuts down. Creating art or seeing art that speaks to us gets us out of the mind’s rabbit holes, be in our body, and express our emotions when words seem difficult to grasp.

I’ve experienced this firsthand, in how the movement of paint and brush helps create an emotional release, even through the deepest experiences of grief and dysregulation. How sitting with beauty helps create a shift within, that attunes you back to neutrality, acceptance, and eventually, hope and grace.

6. Art gets you out of mind chatter and back into flow

Creating art is deeply therapeutic.

It gets you out of mind chatter, as your logical mind slows down, and you feel and just flow. This flow state reconnects you with the richness of the present moment. The more you flow with your creativity – be it through dancing, cooking, painting or making something with your hands, the more you develop inner trust. You reconnect with the wiser, higher, deeper parts of you that has the bird’s eye perspective of your life – your Soul, your Higher Self or Inner Source, as you experience being in sync with Life’s synchronistic flow.

7. Art is the blend of the higher and lower

Creativity helps you experience both the higher and lower together.

Both shadows and light are the ingredients of our physical world. Light is made up of our Oneness, love, and unity with all of Life, and Shadows are our individuation, division, fear, and uniqueness. Each dimension of existence is a recipe of different notes of these. And our Earth plane is a unique blend of these, that create three-dimensional, form-based life.

I’ve experienced how art helps you understand this fundamental law of the Universe. When you’re in front of an easel or paper, you come face to face with both your inspiration and your fears. Art helps you understand that both are sacred and necessary, to create Life. Making art helps me understand the nature of the Light, and have compassion for our shadows and humanity.

8. Art says pleasure is safe and joy is your birthright

Art gets birthed through our human energy system through the Sacral Chakra and the Throat Chakra. The Sacral Chakra harnesses our life force energy to help birth energy (and babies) to form, while our Throat Chakra is the center of refinement, refining the primal creative life force flowing through us, to then be expressed and communicated to others. Having sacred intuitive art in your home, or engaging with creativity brings you in touch with these two centers, especially your Sacral center or your womb space: the seat of your pleasure, uninhibited joy, and sensuality.

Your creative spirit is innate in you, yet our current society conditions us away from our joy and authentic expression.

Practicing your art and harnessing your creative voice connects you back to a natural part of you that may have been conditioned out of you. Your unbridled joy, authentic expression, and creative spirit are yours and yours alone. Just as in childhood, you deserve to express your authentic voice and create for the pure pleasure of it.

This flow, this pleasure, the beauty of your Soul is yours to enjoy, embody and reclaim.
