Understanding The Spiritual Essence Behind Your Career

Written by Avalon Harris.

Spirituality, Entrepreneurship

Career is one of the most important aspects of our life’s journey. When you meet someone new, one of the first questions that you’re asked inevitably asked is, “So, what do you do for a living?” A person’s chosen vocation can give us further insight into their skills, lifestyle and rank on the social hierarchy. It’s unsurprising then that we identify so closely with our career. The danger is, if you identify with what you do instead of who you are, you will forever be giving your power away to that activity.

According to Carl Jung, career plays a key role in the individuation process.

It’s an opportunity for the inner self to grow and develop through its relationship with the external world.

Our vocation transforms over the course of our lifetime and its success is directly correlated with our internal resources of strength and bravery. Do you have what it takes to walk the road less traveled and transcend the herd? Or will you settle for what your predecessors believed was socially acceptable? Vocation helps us blossom into our authentic self.

While society may like to use vocation as a marker of social status, all honest work is equal and worthy under Spirit. Following your innate gifts and passion will lead you to your true calling. If you are unclear about what your calling is, you can always hand it over to the Universe and ask for divine illumination and clarity. Another method that may seem basic, but is deceivingly profound is to ask yourself, “what did I want to be when I was little?”

Maybe it was a veterinarian, a firefighter or a famous author. Tune into the energy of your inner child and see what comes up for you.
Perhaps the job you have now is not your dream career. That’s okay! Honor this as part of your journey and try to adopt a positive attitude. Maintaining a frequency of joy even when you’re doing work that isn’t especially rewarding will contribute to your spiritual growth. The journey is itself is just as important as the destination. It is not possible to waste time when you do your work (whatever that might be) in a heart-lead manner.

The secret to enjoying work is to appreciate the process without becoming too invested in the results. You will derive the most pleasure from work when you enjoy it for its own sake, rather than eagerly anticipating the money and other rewards that come with it. Go after what you know in your gut that you are meant to do, even if you’re not seeing instant results and gratification. In due time you will reap the fruits of your labor. As my Dad always says, “You get what you put in.”
